State-of-the-Art Laser Ablation

Laser Ablation is the process of removing material from a solid surface by irradiating it with a laser beam. With a low level of laser energy, the material being focused upon absorbs the laser’s energy and then changes to a gaseous state. With a higher level of laser energy, the material that is being focused upon will usually be converted to plasma.

Non-contact process

Laser Cleaning is completely non-abrasive and is a solution for applications where the maintenance of tight tolerances is required after the cleaning has been completed. Laser Cleaning removes only the contaminants on the substrate and once removed no damage or surface imperfections on the metal surface will occur.

No Waste & No Clean-up

Unlike traditional abrasive cleaning techniques, there is no need to dispose of the removed material. There is very little residue and any residue that is created can be collected using a fume extraction system, set up near where the beam is cleaning.

Equipment can often be cleaned as an integral part of the operation cycle or done in a cleaning room. Cleaning Downtime can be dramatically reduced or even eliminated.

Will Laser Cleaning damage my material?

The laser will clean without wear on material, leaving no chemical or residue on the surface.

Is it applicable to all types of materials?

It works on metals, alloys, stone, cement and others. When possible we ask for a sample to be sent to us for evaluation. We will video the testing and validate if the laser is the correct method for the project. Some surfaces are not recommended such as carbon fiber.

How fast will it clean?

The rate of cleaning always varies depending on the conditions. Surface corrosion is easy to remove, paint requires more energy and time. Mill scale requires a lot of energy to remove.

Is it safe?

The operator wears goggles for eye protection and a respirator so as not to breathe in fumes of the material being removed. A fume extractor collects fumes and vapours and filters the air to collect the waster for safe disposal. Opaque shielding is used to prevent anyone not wearing laser goggles from seeing the laser beam.
